About Urban Explorer
A durational socially engaged arts project based in Skibbereen. Plans for 2016 include;
What You Seek is Here St Johns Eve 23 June 2016. A sound procession animating the town of Skibbereen and linking Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre with the Rock a wild promontory in the centre of Skibbereen. Four routes were planned from different assembly points traversing the town and approaching the Rock through four rights of way - one of which had become totally blocked and had to be reopened (twice)
Dark Matter: What's missing in art and politics in an enterprise culture, Greg Sholette in conversation with Katherine Waugh. Wednesday 27 July at 2.30 A discursive event during Skibbereen Arts Festival situating the work within a wider trajectory of expanded arts practices and suggesting cultural redundancy can be retooled as resistance. A reading group has been established to discuss related material prior to this event. Attendance at the Fire Station Summer school on Performative Curating: Social & Political Consequences will precede this work.
Walking Tour will trace alternative routes through Skibbereen spatially and proprioceptively (Oct-Dec 2016). In preparation for this work I will participate in a 2-day professional development project led by Stephen Hodge DIY13 T(r)ipping points: the architect-walker and the destabilised city.
Skibbereen Community Family Resource Centre is the anchor partner for the project with support from Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre, Cork ETB and Friends of the Rock. The current phase of the project is supported by an artist in the community project realisation award. The initial phase of the project took place in the weeks prior to and during the Skibbereen Arts Festival 2015 with the support of a residency at West Cork Arts Centre. The second phase involved research through the Autumn of 2015 supported by a Create artist in the community research & development award.
What’s Happening?
Stroll Skibbereen 31 Jan 2017
We followed the pedestrian river route taking a detour to Abbeystrewery graveyard, where over 9,000 people were buried during the famine.
Stroll Skibbereen Jan 24 2017
Weather was wetter than forecasted so we opted for a shorter route that would include visiting a nearby geocache adjacent to the old Skibbereen railway station. We walked a circuit through the Avenue, past Glencurragh Wood and stopping by 2 second hand shops on the way. As we approached we noticed a woman poking around the area of the geocache and guessed she was after the same thing. Killahangil logged us there before we even got home. Before we went … Read More
Stroll Skibbereen Jan 17 2017
This week we our route was a post truth tour. We each had to say something along the way that could have been true or false.
Stroll Skibbereen 10 Jan 2017
Today we decided to walk around Skibbereen looking at what appear to be vacant buildings & sites – these photos are just a small selection of the current vacancies
Walking Tour 25 Nov 2016
Linked in with the Personal Development Group running at the Sutherland Centre and repeated the Glencurragh Wood walk
Walking Tour 11 11 2016 Glencurragh Loop
Lots of ideas at Skibbereen Luncheon Club, Carrig Loop, Lissard, Glencurragh Loop, Grotto Loop, Derry’s Loop – even a loop taking in all the bars in Skibbereen. It was very wet so we went for a shorter walk in Glencurragh and were totally surprised to find a fairy trail running through the little wood adjacent to the avenue – it really brightened up a very wet and windy afternoon for us.
Walking Tour 11 – 11 – 2016
On Friday the older people in Skibbereen Luncheon Club will create a Walking Tour. Meet at Cara house at 3pm to walk the route.
Walking Tour 2 – 11 – 2016
Public Parks & Public Art – Again visiting places I had never been. Two parks – one without any name and plenty of statues commemorating O’Donovan Rossa & Cannon Goodman alongside plaques and random street furniture and of course the river Ilen.
Walking Tour 20 -10 – 2016
Take me to the River. Starting at North St we explored alleyways and porches trying to take us to the river Ilen. And approached the bridge that is blocked from both sides. The question is who dunnit?
Walking Tour 13 Oct 2016
Two graveyards and a community garden – cycles of growth and death. Beautiful walk in sunshine.
Walking Tours of Skibbereen

Gregory Sholette & Katherine Waugh at Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre today. It was intense, provocative and rigorous. The live audio broadcast did not work – but we have the recording and will broadcast it as soon as possible.Apologies for any inconvenience.

Tomorrow’s talk is nearly booked out at Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre. We will be doing a live audio broadcast from 2:30 – 4:30 courtesy of Clonlineradio.com. Gregory Sholette in conversation with Katherine Waugh should be more than interesting. A short video of What You Seek is Here will precede the discussion as well as a short introduction setting the context within the Urban Explorer Arts Project ongoing in Skibbereen.
Urban Explorer 07-07-2016
Penultimate meeting of our spatially distributed reading group this morning discussing chapter 7 of Dark Matter: Art and Politics in the Age of Enterprise Culture. The Unnameable, as the chapter is titled, points to a people yet to come, the Dark Matter of the art world. Artist, academic, author and activist Gregory Sholette will be in conversation … Read More

Michael Stephens made a great job of combining text & map into one comprehensible unit – lots of interest – hope the weather holds
Urban Explorer 16-06-2016
Draft image & text Did you know that the motto for Skibbereen is What You Seek is Here? Quod Petit Hic Est. This is the inspiration for a community based, family friendly arts event. On St Johns Eve 23 June 2016 the ringing of the Town Hall bell at 7pm will signal the beginning of something new: a sound procession to animate the town of Skibbereen. People are invited to parade from different assembly points (see map) to the four … Read More

Meeting at the Town Hall on Friday were a group of brilliant musicians mashing Claptons Cocaine with the Pogues Irish Rover. Some of them already knew the Rock some didn’t – but all welcomed the opportunity to get involved in plans for 23 June – pending other life commitments.
Urban Explorer 02-06-2016
Impediments to moving ahead are being eliminated and the date for What You Seek is Here is set. St Johns Eve 23 June @ 7pm. This is the date originally intended and I am trying to figure out how I side tracked. Meeting at Liss Ard we framed the invitation and the schedule of things to happen in advance. Then we popped into Skibb CFRC to check dates and now we are good to go on 23 June. Interesting to … Read More

Urban Explorer 13-05-2016
Clearing the right of way to the fourth entrance to the Rock on High St (lower) in dappled sunshine and great company.
Urban Explorer 12-05-2016
Its not easy to get started again after the long break. Its fantastic to get the support of the artist in the community scheme, but in the intervening time between research phase and now we have got out of the habit of meeting. Summer brings with it lots of urgency to do things in the garden, in and on the sea and with other groups. So myself and Nick went to Lissard today to try out walking in procession singing/chanting … Read More

Urban Explorer 17-02-2016
When is an event participatory and when is it not – when is an event like a conference and when is it not – lots of semantics this week and we struggle to make ourselves understood to ourselves and each other. Pictured above is one of the access points to the Rock, that needs clearing to open up the right of way again. With the help of some guerrilla gardeners we should be sorted.
Urban Explorer 10-02-2016
Talking tech this week – Nick brought Ableton’s Push pad-based controller to create and perform music, with loads of instruments & effects, so hoping to develop somethings specific for the arts centre with this technology – discussed documentation and social media to capture participant experiences to be edited into a single short film – will establish a Facebook page to hold content and mediate work prior to the event – It’s hard to establish way of communicating in between meetings … Read More

Urban Explorer 28-01-01
Working as a group getting things down on paper is tough – so we projected the text onto the wall and took it apart moved cut and pasted until we were happy with the summary project description.
Urban Explorer 21-01-01
Small group today – focussing on translating ideas into words so that we can communicate with people who we hope will translate those words back into their own creative ideas – bit of a loop going on there.

Collaborative Arts Week 8
Week 8 and we had another walk through. The sun was shining this morning and there was nowhere better to be than at the top of the Rock looking out over the town across to the Uillinn Arts Centre and the surrounding hinterland. The area is so large we gave names to particular places to help identify them to ourselves when working out our plans. Doctors Hill, Telecom Lane and Windmill Lane are access points. Well Lane, Fire Pit, Famine Memorial, … Read More
Collaborative Arts Week 7
Week 7 was important for us. We decided that we can continue to work together as a group after the research phase is complete. The experience of having spent 6 weeks meeting in different sites, discussing diverse artistic practices and processes gives us a shared field of reference and a language for discussing our artistic ambitions. Next week we will try and pin down those ambitions more specifically – a process that will be both iterative and generative. This week we … Read More
Collaborative Arts Performance Pack Week 06 Ballydehob Social Club
Getting gritty today. We went to see an exhibition by Suzy Cremers and the sets for her interactive performance Underworld. Afterwards we had a very ‘disciplined’ discussion using Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process. It was a real pleasure to focus on the work of one member of the group. An intriguing, challenging, eye opening and brave day for all of us I think.
Collaborative Arts Performance Pack Week 05 Masons Hall Skibbereen
This morning we visited the Masons hall in Skibbereen which has been recently completely restored. The ornate and detailed decoration of the Lodge holds its history and current practice; the tools of masonry carry moral instruction ‘I will strive to love and care upon the level and by the square” on a brass square dating back to 1597; and astronomical information used to indicate time of day and time of year by rod and plumb-line. Dermod O’Brien made us welcome in Lodge no 15 and gave … Read More
Collaborative Arts Performance Pack Week 04 Location | Duration | Documentation
Finished off the Create performance resource today at Uillinn and reviewed some of the audio recordings made at the Rock during the Summer. Then went to see a plaque I had never noticed before on Bridge St. It commemorates the Clerke sisters who are described as astronomers, scientists and writers, an unusual occupation for their gender and times as they were born just before the famine in 1840 & 42. It was so easy being in the arts centre compared … Read More
Collaborative Arts Performance Pack Week 03 Form
We met in the Board Room on the top floor of the Sutherland Centre, currently the home of Cork ETB, formerly the site of West Cork Arts Centre & in previous times a Bank. This was followed by a jaunt to the Rock via Doctors Lane (pictured above). Taking a break next week … Read More
Collaborative Arts Performance Pack Week 02 Context | Audience
Reddy took this photo while we were in Skibbereen Courthouse – looks like we are in a church. As well as going through material related to Context and Audience in the pack, Mary Jordan came in to talk about Tania Bruguera the artist that she had selected to contribute to the Urban Explorer archive of favourite artists. It was a very apt contribution given Brugueras interest in social justice and previous tangles with the law. We enjoyed exploring the space and … Read More
