Our first attempt at creating a link between The Rock and the Arts Centre came a cropper last night. After weeks of planning, sourcing equipment with support from local business and agencies and with near perfect weather conditions I thought to myself, Yes, we can do this. We had two teams of three at each location (the arts centre and the Rock) as well as photographers ready to document the process. Our opening sequence was to project a silhouette of … Read More
This initial foray in illumination has been tough. The light only arrived on Wednesday – but wow, was she worth waiting for – a beautifully tooled piece of equipment that can only be described as having great poise. The programme of project work in progress is included as part of the Skibbereen Arts Festival launched this evening. I took up a studio residency at Uillinn – West Cork Arts Centre today. Now I can see a sliver of the Rock through my window. I was warmly welcomed by Toma McCullim & Al Zarube who are also artists in residence and got great support from WCAC staff.
We are not alone. The University of Maryland is conducting a dig at the Rock. They are excavating a row of dwelling houses that were built into the rockface. It’s fascinating. We won’t be digging holes today but we will be exploring. All welcome. Photos come from the dig Facebook page Archaeology of the Irish Diaspora and Modern Ireland Project – UMD
We will have our first foray starting at the top of the Rock at the Famine Memorial. If you haven’t been before, there is an entrance just opposite the eircom building at the top of High St, walk up the pedestrian lane about 100 metres and you’re there. You might want to wear runners – the ground can be a bit rough for sandals. There is parking for one or two cars on the hard shoulder opposite the entrance but you might be better off leaving your car by the Garda Station & walking up.
