Lots of ideas at Skibbereen Luncheon Club, Carrig Loop, Lissard, Glencurragh Loop, Grotto Loop, Derry’s Loop – even a loop taking in all the bars in Skibbereen. It was very wet so we went for a shorter walk in Glencurragh and were totally surprised to find a fairy trail running through the little wood adjacent to the avenue – it really brightened up a very wet and windy afternoon for us.

Public Parks & Public Art – Again visiting places I had never been. Two parks – one without any name and plenty of statues commemorating O’Donovan Rossa & Cannon Goodman alongside plaques and random street furniture and of course the river Ilen.

This Autumn why not consider participating in workshops to develop Walking Tours of Skibbereen. What would your walking tour look like? Whether you know Skibbereen as a native or not, there is always a different way of seeing what is around you. Each workshop is stand-alone and you are welcome to attend any or all of them. The first three are from 10am-1pm on 13th and 20th October and 2nd November at Skibbereen Town Hall. More dates will be announced later. Workshops are FREE of charge, thanks to the support of partner institutions.

If you can walk and talk these workshops will be right up your alley. Together we will plan themed routes based on the interests and creativity of participants. In addition we will think about different ways we can conduct ourselves and be conducted in walking. Please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk for approx 60-90 minutes, bear in mind that parts of Skibbereen can be quite hilly.

If there is sufficient interest I am happy to put on a workshop specifically for people who have difficulty in walking or who may use wheelchairs/rollators (so please let me know).

Prior registration essential. U-18s must be accompanied by parent or guardian.

Ultimately it is intended to offer the walking tours developed during these workshops to the public during Skibbereen Arts Festival 2017 led by volunteer walk directors. See also the Skibbereen Urban Explorer Facebook page

27 & 28 August | From those held in a complex system with little clarity about the future [In The Betweens We Wait] is a reflection on life in a Direct Provision Centre in Ireland today.
 
It takes the form of a multi-disciplinary, multi-sensory art exhibition and installation by members of West Cork’s Asylum Seeking community and will inhabit The Waiting Room of the Baltimore Harbour. The exhibition will open at 12pm on Saturday August 27 th and run until 6pm on Sunday 28 th
 
[In The Betweens We Wait] is the result of a number of months of work by women based at Clonakilty’s Direct Provision Centre, the Clonakilty Lodge. In response to the theme of Waiting the group have created a series of intricate and
varied textile pieces which will be on display, along with photographs and a beautiful and thought provoking soundscape featuring spoken word and songs.
 
All of the artistic and creative content comes from the multi-talented members of this Asylum Seeking group. Those who have worked on the exhibition include women from Bangladesh, India, South Africa and Somalia.
 
Some of these members of our community have been waiting for a response to their asylum requests for up to 9 years. People have been born, lived and died here, in that state of waiting, not knowing when or how it will end. The project hopes to raise awareness of the situation faced by them and others like them across Ireland. It seeks to highlight their liminal status, caught between worlds both legal and social/cultural. It also aims to engage the public around the question of Global Citizenship, and what the rights and responsibilities of such citizenship entail.
 
The project has been facilitated by West Cork artist Anne Scallan, who also helped the women organise their textile pieces, with photography by Michael Holly and sound work facilitated and recorded by Elizabeth Ewing. The Friends
of the Clonakilty Asylum Seekers have been immensely supportive throughout.

CANCELLED| Sarah Richardson will make drawings and sculptures out of paper and clay and found materials that will create an installation reflecting on ‘freedom’, freedom to create, freedom to imagine , freedom to dream, freedom to ‘be’.

‘Poetic dialogue may go any way,
